Hi Dan,

I thought your article was well-thought out, articulate and intriguing. It reminded me of when the Queen visited the St. James Cathedral in Toronto almost 10 years ago. Canadians were lining the street just for a glimpse of her Majesty. I still remember the squeals of delight as the Queen arrived, with exclamations like "She's so tiny!" recorded on my camcorder. Although there are many critics in Canada, in general Canadians do have respect for the Royal Family.

As for influencing economic policies, Canada hasn't depended on the Royal Family for centuries. The Royals are an institution, devoid of providing practical help to the masses but certainly able to provide entertainment and fascinating stories. (You might say the same for our political leaders here as well.) In Canada, the Royals continue show value as ambassadors and perhaps a bridge to our past heritage - simpler times which some may miss.

And yes, we have our share of Royal Family jokes and cartoons. (It's not uncommon to see cartoons of Prince Charles depicted as a donkey in these cartoons.)
